ABOUT THE MINISTRY

The scope of activities and powers of the Ministry of Economy of the Slovak Republic pursuant to Section 6 of the Act No. 575/2001 Coll. on the Organisation of Government Activity and on the Organisation of Central State Administration, as amended

The Ministry of Economy of the Slovak Republic is the central state administration body for

 

a)      Industry with the exception of wood processing, biotechnologies, food industry and construction products;

b)      Power industry including nuclear fuel management and radioactive waste storage and power efficiency;

c)       Heating and gas industry;

d)      Extraction and modification of solid propellant, oil and natural gas extraction, metallic and non-metallic raw material extraction and searching and research of radioactive raw materials and their extraction;

e)      Supporting small and medium-sized businesses, including supporting food industry products not included in the Annex I of the Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union and supporting wood processing and biotechnologies;

f)        Strategy of creating business environment and supporting business environment, including supporting food industry business environment products of which are not included in the Annex I of the Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union and business environment in the field of wood processing and biotechnologies;

g)       Internal trade, foreign trade, including trade with military material and developing foreign trade policy, consumer protection with the exception of consumer protection when providing financial services and coordination of policy in the internal market of the European Union;

h)      Protection and use of mineral raw materials including the main surveillance over the protection and use of mineral deposits;

i)        Main surveillance over security and protection of health at work and security of operation in mining activity, activity performed in mining manner and when using explosives;

j)        Carat marking and testing of precious metals;

k)       Inspection of the ban on development, manufacturing, storing, using and trading with chemical weapons and precursors needed for their manufacturing;

l)        Management of the economic mobilisation tasks;

m)    Denationalisation and privatisation of the state property and state property management in business sphere;

n)      Strategy of development and realisation of innovations in the field pursuant to letters a) through d).

Moreover, the Ministry of Economy of the Slovak Republic shall determine the criteria for the selection of staff in trade-economic departments of Slovak embassies abroad (Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Slovak Republic).

 

The Minister shall manage the Ministry and be responsible for its activities.

 

At the time of absence, the Minister shall be represented within the scope of Minister’s powers by the State Secretary. The Minister may authorise the State Secretary also in other cases to represent the Minister within the scope of Minister’s rights and duties. The State Secretary shall be appointed and recalled by the Government of the Slovak Republic based on a proposal of the Minister.

 

The Ministry is a service office pursuant to Section 9 (1) letter a) of the Act No. 400/2009 Coll. on State Service. Tasks related with the application of state employment relations and with organisational ensuring of the activities of the Ministry being the service office shall be performed by the Head of Service Office who is at the same time also the senior managing employee. He/she shall be appointed and recalled by the Government of the Slovak Republic.

 

The Ministry of Economy of the Slovak Republic participates in the development of a unified state policy of the Slovak Republic, within its scope of powers it performs state administration and fulfils other tasks stipulated by law and other generally binding legal regulations. Within the scope of its defined scope of powers, the Ministry is responsible also for the defence and creation of conditions to realise requirements of ensuring preparation for defence and protection. Within the defined scope of powers, it ensures also tasks related with negotiating international treaties, developing relations among countries and international cooperation, including tasks arising for the Slovak Republic from international treaties as well as its membership in international organisations. It examines the issue in areas within its scope of powers, analyses achieved results and takes measures to deal with current issues. It processes the concept of developing entrusted areas and dealing with basic issues that it submits to the Government of the Slovak Republic. It takes care of proper legal arrangement of issues within its scope of powers, prepares proposals of legislation and other generally binding legal regulations, ensures following of legality within its scope of powers.
