D. Sakova: Gas negotiations continue in Brussels

On 17–18 February 2025, Denisa Saková, the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Economy of the Slovak Republic, made a working trip to Brussels. There, she took part in a series of negotiations within the framework of a working expert group with representatives of the European Commission, including the European Commissioner for Energy and Housing, Dan Jørgensen, as well as with representatives of Ukraine. The negotiations focused on the important topic of current gas shortages and gas transit to Europe.

"The situation on the gas market in Europe has deteriorated further due to the resumption of gas transit via Ukraine becoming more complicated. Europe is currently unable to fully replace the shortfall, and Ukraine itself, following attacks on its gas fields, now has to buy large volumes of gas in our Central European region. I firmly believe that, in the next few weeks, the European Commission will bring forward a set of measures that will effectively stabilise energy prices for the year 2026 more affordable for industry and households alike. Our negotiations will continue," said Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Economic Affairs D. Saková.

The main topics of the meeting of the working group, which was attended by experts from Slovakia and the European Commission in Brussels, were the transit of gas to Europe, gas shortages in the region, and the consequent rise in gas prices on the market. On these topics, Minister D. Saková also attended a bilateral meeting with Ditte Juul Jørgensen, Director General for Energy at the European Commission. Similarly, she met with the European Commissioner for Energy and Housing, Dan Jørgensen, and the German Galushchenko, the Ukrainian Minister for Energy.

The current market price for gas is around 55 EUR/MWh. In contrast, Slovakia purchased gas at an average price of 35 EUR/MWh in 2024. The price for households was capped at EUR 28/MWh in 2024, representing around half of the current market price. The Slovak Ministry of Economy will therefore continue negotiations with the European Commission.
