70th Session of the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women (CSW70) in New York with Slovak Participation
Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Economy of the Slovak Republic Denisa Saková undertook a working visit to New York from March 9–13, where she participated in the 70th session of the United Nations (UN) Commission on the Status of Women. Her participation followed up on her speech at the Global Leaders’ Meeting on Women in Beijing (October 2025), a political gathering of leaders on gender equality.
“Equal opportunities, the empowerment of women in society regardless of age, and the protection of women from violence both offline and online—these are not only matters of justice; they are also prerequisites for a thriving economy. The modern economy is built on the talent, expertise, and leadership of people regardless of gender. However, it is not enough to simply pass laws; women themselves must demonstrate the courage and determination to strengthen their position in society,” said Denisa Saková, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Economy of the Slovak Republic.
During the ministerial meeting, another topic of discussion was supporting the status of older women in society, who face lower incomes, a higher risk of social isolation, and limited access to services. Another important topic was violence against women, which remains a problem in society even in the 21st century; as technology evolves, new forms of violence are emerging, such as cyberbullying, online harassment, and the sharing of intimate material without consent. Slovakia is therefore working to transpose the new European directive on combating violence against women and domestic violence, which also covers these new forms.
“In today’s complex geopolitical environment—marked by security challenges, economic pressures, and rapid technological development—preventing and addressing violence against women and girls must remain a clear priority. Violence is not only a violation of human rights; it also poses a threat to social cohesion, democratic institutions, and sustainable development. Therefore, it is also essential to strengthen the UN framework at the global level. Slovakia supports efforts to ensure that cyberviolence is adequately addressed in relevant international instruments. The digital safety of women and girls must be viewed as an integral part of the human rights agenda, not merely as a technical issue,” stated Denisa Saková.
The Slovak Republic also co-organized an event focused on building partnerships to empower women, together with Serbia, Turkey, the United Arab Emirates, Nigeria, and Azerbaijan.
The program also included a visit to the New York City Economic Development Corporation (NYCEDC), where discussions focused on supporting innovation, investment, and the development of the knowledge economy. At the Amazon Web Services headquarters, the minister met with technology leader Wilfrid Solan, who is also an active member of the Slovak business community in the United States. The discussion focused on the development of artificial intelligence, technological innovations, and opportunities for Slovak experts to participate in global technology projects.
“If we want to be successful as a country in a rapidly changing world, we must be present where decisions are made regarding technology, innovation, and energy. Partnerships with global leaders and investments in talent and know-how are the way to strengthen our competitiveness and the future of the Slovak economy,” added Minister Denisa Saková.
During her working visit, the minister also met with the Slovak expatriate and business community in the U.S., noting that Slovaks working abroad naturally connect the Slovak business community with the rest of the world.
Slovakia was thus part of key international discussions and, at the same time, opened up new opportunities for cooperation in areas that will shape future economic development.
