Slovakia accelerates preparations for a new nuclear power plant; U.S. nuclear industry leaders to visit Bratislava
Slovakia is continuing its strategic preparations for a new nuclear power plant (NPP) project. The Ministry of Economy of the Slovak Republic is organizing an international workshop in Bratislava on June 3–4, 2026, focused on the preparation and implementation of large-scale nuclear projects. The workshop will bring together government representatives, representatives of the U.S. nuclear industry, and experts in financing, regulation, project management, and supply chains. The event will take place as part of the Slovak–U.S. strategic dialogue on civil nuclear energy, building on the intergovernmental agreement between the Slovak Republic and the United States of America.
The workshop will focus on key areas for the successful implementation of new nuclear projects, including project management, financing, governance, EU licensing processes, risk management, stakeholder engagement, industry readiness, and supply chain development. Discussions will also cover experiences from nuclear project development in Europe, including Poland and Bulgaria.
“The new nuclear power plant is one of Slovakia’s most important strategic projects for the coming decades. It is an investment in the country’s energy security, stable energy prices, industrial competitiveness, and long-term prosperity. Our ambition is to prepare this project professionally, transparently, and in close cooperation with the best international partners with practical experience in implementing major nuclear projects around the world. We are taking an equally responsible approach to project financing. With an investment of this magnitude, energy security must go hand in hand with economic sustainability and the protection of public finances,” said Denisa Saková, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Economy of the Slovak Republic.
The aim of the workshop is to establish a functional project ecosystem in Slovakia for the development of a new nuclear power plant—an environment in which the government, the investor, industry, financial institutions, regulators, and project partners will cooperate in a coordinated manner from the outset. The workshop is not focused on the selection of any specific technology or supplier.
The event will feature presentations by experts from leading international companies and institutions affiliated with the U.S.-based Nuclear Energy Institute (NEI), which represents the nuclear industry, as well as experts in project financing, governance, and EU permitting processes. The programme will also include discussions between Slovak companies and representatives of the U.S. nuclear industry on opportunities for Slovak industry participation in future supply chains.
“International experience shows that the success of large-scale nuclear projects depends primarily on the quality of preparation and coordination among all partners, starting from the earliest stages of the project. That is precisely why we aim to build strong partnerships in Slovakia between the government, industry, investors, and technology partners even before final investment decisions are taken,” concluded Denisa Saková.
Slovakia has long been among the countries with a high share of nuclear energy, and the new nuclear power plant (NPP) is one of the key projects for the future energy security and competitiveness of the Slovak Republic.
